How to Transport & Install an Established Beehive
Before Pickup: Be Prepared
Before arriving to pick up your hive, make sure you have the following:
-
A vehicle with adequate space (truck bed, SUV, or trailer preferred)
-
Ratchet straps or tie-downs to secure the hive
-
A level surface in your apiary ready for placement
-
A screened veil or protective gear (recommended)
-
A calm, unhurried schedule — avoid rushing the process
Established hives are heavy and contain live bees. Planning ahead is essential.
Transporting Your Established Beehive
Vehicle Setup
-
Place the hive on a flat, stable surface in your vehicle.
-
Keep the hive upright at all times — never tip or lay it on its side.
-
Ensure adequate ventilation; do not cover entrances or airflow areas.
-
Use ratchet straps to secure the hive so it cannot slide or tip during transport.
During Transport
-
Drive smoothly and cautiously, avoiding hard stops or sharp turns.
-
Do not leave the hive in a hot vehicle for extended periods.
-
Transport your hive directly to its final location whenever possible.

Installing Your Beehive at Home
Placement
-
Place the hive on a level stand at least 12–18 inches off the ground.
-
Ensure the entrance faces an open area with a clear flight path.
-
Choose a location with morning sun, afternoon shade if possible, and protection from strong winds.
Once Placed
-
Gently set the hive in its final position before opening the entrance.
-
Avoid moving the hive again once bees begin orienting to the location.
-
Allow the colony time to settle — do not open the hive immediately.
First 48 Hours After Installation
-
Expect increased bee activity as workers re-orient to their new location.
-
Avoid disturbing the hive during this period.
-
Ensure any provided feeder remains in place and accessible.
-
Watch from a distance — this is normal adjustment behavior.
Important Notes & Recommendations
-
Do not open or inspect the hive the same day it is installed.
-
Avoid installing during heavy rain or extreme weather if possible.
-
Keep pets, livestock, and foot traffic away from the hive entrance.
-
Review all care instructions provided at pickup.
Proper handling during transport and installation plays a huge role in long-term colony success.
